Jaypee Greens Greater Noida News:-In a shot in the arms
for environmentalists, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ruled that the
periphery of the Dadri wetland in Greater Noida's Bil Akbarpur village has
shrunk drastically, with reclaimed land consumed by ongoing building and
development projects reducing it to half of its original size.Based on an original the survey of India
topo-sheet and a current Google map, NGT said that only 32.7 hectares of the
wetland remained from the original 72 hectares. Most of the wetland's periphery
has been eaten up by constructions. NGT has instructed builders to superimpose
the original survey of India topo-sheet and Google maps on their building plans
to ascertain the exact amount of land they have appropriated.
Under wetland protection rules, UP forest
department and environmentalists have been trying to reclaim what was
originally a U-shaped wetland since 2012. The dispute started two years back
when it was noticed that a private university and an upcoming builder project
had eaten into part of the wetland. The tribunal had then ordered that no
construction be carried out within 500m of the wetland. However, despite
ongoing inspections and reports, the tussle continued as private builders
continued building upon the notified safety zone."The court has given the concerned parties
some time to look into the matter. Further studies will be done before it is
heard again by NGT," said K K Singh, district forest officer (DFO), Gautam
Budh Nagar."It has been a long-drawn battle.
Preservation of wetlands is crucial for the country. We've to ensure that those
parts that have come under the builder projects are reclaimed quickly,"
said Vikrant Tongad, the Greater Noida-based environmentalist. Powered by Times Of India.
